…one man's contribution to the Weeeeerly Wild World
I just had this little glitch when trying to use Skype within Outlook on Firefox.
Basically the Skype sidebar wouldn’t signin, it was just doing the spinny round thing with no explanation. I tried refreshing, signing out and back in etc with no effect.
In addition to this I noticed under my user/screen name (which wasn’t green to indicate it was signed in) it had “Default-[followed by a load of numbers and letters which I don’t want to repeat here in case it poses a security issue]” which I hadn’t seen before, and looked odd:
I then thought to download the Skype Desktop Application but along the way I was invited to use Skype via the website, so I thought I would give that a try. It failed to load but this time gave an explanation:
“Update your browser.”
I was using Firefox 35.0 and I have the automatic updating disabled (I prefer to upgrade things when I choose to/when I encounter a fault, rather than have an update install automatically and then perhaps something going wrong and me not knowing about it – that and the download hogging my bandwidth.)
I have now upgraded to Firefox 43.0 and all is well; my picture has the green light and there is no “Default-xxxxx-123456789…” under my name when I click on it and Skype signs in.
So there you are, if Skype doesn’t work for you in Outlook when using Firefox, check your browser is up-to-date.
